When it was announced that flag football would be an official sport at the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, excitement grew that NFL stars would have a chance to win actual gold medals on the largest international stage possible.
Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts jumped on board the event's marketing as the NFL face, drumming up interest in the competition in 2028.
It wasn't a question of whether NFL stars would participate in the Olympics and have spots on the national team, but how many from each team would be allowed to throw their hat in the ring?
Which QB should go? Would you rather have Hurts, or would you rather have someone like Lamar Jackson? Maybe you'd want someone with the pocket control of a Joe Burrow with legs when needed. What about Patrick Mahomes? Jordan Love?
All the while, the official national flag football team of the United States was left watching the discussion. The players who've dedicated their lives to the sport of flag football were pushed aside like nerds in high school, laughed at while fans propped up the jocks of the NFL as the saviors of the sport.
After Saturday, it might be less about which NFL players will be on the Olympic roster and more about whether any can actually make the team.

Team USA took on two teams made up of current NFL stars and former legends and made sure to prove to them why they shouldn't be overlooked in the Olympic selection.
It was almost like watching two teams play different sports, as the smaller, more experienced flag football players embarrassed the likes of Joe Burrow, Tom Brady, and the other established NFL veterans.
While the NFL teams sat back and played a more traditional style you'd seen in an American tackle football game, the flag football team was making a thousand moves a minute, dodging around the shrunken field without any resistance.
When the NFL stars did get some pressure on the flag football players, they were instantly flagged for using too much force or for causing illegal contact while attempting to snatch a flag.
Joe Burrow was one of the first examples of how it wasn't going to be so easy for the NFL players, as he got one of his first passes taken back to the house in stunning fashion.
Although the NFL players had limited time to fully practice flag football and still have two years before the actual event, it's no longer a guarantee that the NFL will have a heavy presence at the Olympics.
Team USA Flag Football told the NFL players not to be overconfident.
If they were, they won't be any longer.
