The Denver Broncos are looking to build on a disappointing conclusion to their 2025 season, which saw them nearly reach the Super Bowl after losing quarterback Bo Nix to a brutal playoff injury. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, as Drake Maye and the New England Patriots claimed a 10-7 victory in the AFC Championship Game to advance. As they look to next season, Broncos head coach Sean Payton is considering improving how the offense runs. On Tuesday, the Super Bowl-winning coach explained that he'll give up most of the playcalling to the team's offensive coordinator, Davis Webb. It's a significant change in that most people didn't expect Payton to ever relinquish that particular role whe nit comes to coaching. "It was something that I kind of knew during the year. He and I visited on a handful of occasions. We're talking about Davis Webb," he told reporters. "He's extremely talented. With regards to playcalling, it's something that I think he'll be really good at," Payton said, adding, "I would only [give up playcalling] if I knew that it would help our team." The Broncos coach also admitted he would "still be involved" in what the team is doing offensively, just as he is with what they do defensively. He stated that he believes Webb "has a gift" and is "real sharp" on the Broncos' staff. The Broncos’ disheartening result in the AFC Championship Game came at home amid cold, snowy conditions, in a game that lacked offense. Backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham threw for 133 yards and a touchdown, along with an interception, in his first time playing in forever. The Patriots generated slightly more offense from their ground game, though, with Rhamondre Stevenson rushing for 71 yards, and Maye getting another 65 yards with a touchdown. A Patriots' field goal decided the game in the second half. Denver went 14-3 last season with two of their losses on the road, while the Patriots were a perfect 8-0 on the road for their season. It’s worth noting that the Broncos ranked 10th last season in yards of offense per game, with 342.6 yards per game. However, they ranked about in the middle of the NFL when it came to rushing, averaging 118.7 yards per game, with J.K. Dobbins sidelined for seven games due to injury. After working with the Broncos in various coaching roles since 2026, Webb became the team's new offensive coordinator for next season. He'll take over for Joe Lombardi, who held the role since 2023, but left to become Senior offensive assistant with the Baltimore Ravens.
