Outfielder Roman Anthony , considered one of the top two prospects in baseball, will join infielder/outfielder Kristian Campbell and shortstop Marcelo Mayer in the trio’s first trip to Fort Myers.
The Red Sox added nine non-roster invitees to spring training, the team announced Tuesday, with their big three prospects headlining the list.
Anthony, the 20-year-old who was rated the No. 2 prospect by Baseball America, put together a stellar 2024 season where he slashed .291/.396/.498 with 18 homers across Double A Portland and Triple A Worcester.
Anthony played 35 games at Worcester, hitting .344 with a .463 on-base percentage and a .982 OPS. He is projected to be a star-caliber player who could impact the Sox this season, potentially as early as Opening Day.
Campbell, a fourth-round compensation pick in 2023 following Xander Bogaerts’s departure, burst onto the scene in 2024 and Baseball America ranked him the minors’ No. 4 prospect. Between three levels (High A Greenville, Portland, and Worcester), the 22-year-old hit a mind-boggling .330/.439/.558 with a .997 OPS.
After hitting just four homers during his final season at Georgia Tech, Campbell made some swing adjustments the Red Sox system, and increased his total to 20 in 2024. With the Sox having a vacancy at second base, Campbell has a real shot at making the team out of camp.
Mayer, 22, was rated the No. 15 prospect in Baseball, per Baseball America. He hit .307/.370/.480 at Portland, but a lumbar strain caused the Red Sox to shut him down toward the end of the year. Injuries have plagued Mayer throughout his minor-league tenure, causing him to drop outside of the top 10 among prospects.
The Red Sox also signed third baseman Abraham Toro to a minor-league deal, and invited him to camp. Also receiving invites Tuesday were catchers Nathan Hickey and Mark Kolozsvary, and pitchers Jovani Morán, Brian Van Belle, and Jacob Webb.
