The Detroit Pistons currently hold a 3 1/2-game lead atop the Eastern Conference over the Boston Celtics, but they were hit with concerning injury news Thursday morning.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, superstar guard and MVP candidate Cade Cunningham is expected to miss an “extended period” after being diagnosed with a collapsed lung.
“Sources tell me that Detroit Pistons superstar Cade Cunningham has been diagnosed with a mild collapsed lung and is expected to miss an extended period of time,” Charania said. “The Pistons are not quite sure exactly how long — it could be a matter of weeks. Obviously, the playoffs are about a month away, but there is some optimism he’ll be back.”

Charania also noted the challenges Cunningham may face in regaining his conditioning once he returns. For a Pistons team with legitimate NBA Finals aspirations, the timing couldn’t be much worse, with just 14 games remaining in the regular season.
This season, he's averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, and 5.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 46.1% from the field. Not to mention, he's the Pistons floor general, which will be a hard void to fill.

“We were just getting started, Cade,” a fan said.
Someone else added, “Imagine being four games away from qualifying for the MVP and having your lung collapse.”
Another wrote, “Pistons fans just got punched in the gut… Cunningham out for an extended period.”
“Actually terrible. No fan of any team wants to hear that,” a fan shared.
