On Saturday, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Washington Wizards had an intense battle on the hardwood, with several players getting involved in an altercation that has resulted in various punishments from the league. The incident occurred with only 27 seconds left on the clock before halftime as OKC’s Jaylin Williams and Washington’s Justin Champagnie got into a shoving exchange underneath the basket. Thunder player Ajay Mitchell also got involved, with Champagnie pushing him in the face. Other players quickly got involved, including Cason Wallace, with the fighting going into the crowd area. Mitchell and Champagnie received double technical fouls. Once the referees had settled the situation down, Wallace, Williams, Champagnie, and Mitchell were all ejected from the game. According to NBA insider Bobby Marks, both Mitchell and Champagnie are suspended for one game without pay for the incident. Along with that, OKC's Williams was hit with a $50,000 fine, while OKC's Wallace and the Wizards’ Anthony Gill each received $35,000 fines for their involvement. Oklahoma City came away with a 132-111 road victory despite the extracurricular activities on the court. OKC led 69-64 at halftime, but went on to take a commanding lead in the second half, capturing their 56th win of the season. Those punishment decisions arrived a bit before the news arrived that the NBA had rescinded a technical foul assessed to Luka Doncic during Saturday night's heated exchange with an Orlando Magic player, keeping Doncic from serving a one-game suspension. Reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 40 points on 17-of-27 shooting and also dished out seven assists. Isaiah Hartenstein also had himself a game, nearly recording an impressive triple-double. He finished with nine points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists in the Thunder's win. Washington continues to struggle throughout their season. Despite making big moves to acquire former All-Star players Trae Young and Anthony Davis, they're 16-54 and next play at the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night. The Thunder will be without Jaylin Williams for Monday night's game against the Philadelphia 76ers. However, a recent ESPN report indicated they should get another player back, as Jalen Williams will return from injury to play. For more about basketball, visit Newsweek Sports.
