CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Fort Wayne TinCaps survived a dramatic ninth-inning comeback attempt to defeat the Lake County Captains 7-6.
Lake County, the High-A affiliate of the Guardians, struck first with an Aaron Walton solo home run, but Fort Wayne answered in the second inning with solo shots from Luke Cantwell and Kavares Tears to take a 2-1 lead.
Cantwell continued his offensive production in the fifth inning with a two-run double that helped the TinCaps build a 5-1 advantage. Fort Wayne appeared to put the game away in the ninth inning, extending their lead to 7-2 on two insurance runs.
The Captains mounted a furious rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring four runs through a combination of walks and a clutch two-run single by Logun Clark that brought the tying run to third base.
C.J. Widger ended the threat by striking out Kevin Rivas.
Winyer Chourio earned the win for Fort Wayne, while Jacob Zibin took the loss.
