Joe Rogan fell into a fit of giggles while recalling President Donald Trump’s response to his concerns about possible terrorist attacks during the White House’s UFC Freedom 250 event last weekend.
“I said to Trump, ‘I hope we don’t die in a terrorist attack.’ He goes, ‘We gotta go somehow.’ I go, ‘What the fuck, dude?’” Rogan said laughing.
During Saturday’s episode of his podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan recalled his chat with the president after his guest, MMA trainer Trevor Wittman, revealed he had been “really nervous” that “something could happen” at Trump’s fighting event, citing the possibility of drone strikes at the controversial event amid the president’s conflict with Iran.
Rogan’s other guest, UFC Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje, who fought at the event, also shared what his thoughts had been ahead of the June 14 fight night, telling Rogan and Wittman, “I was like, ‘Fuck it. If I get taken out in the middle of the cage, how fucking legendary would that be?’”
Elsewhere in the episode, Rogan called the White House UFC fights, which Trump held to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States while concurrently celebrating his 80th birthday, “fucking phenomenal.”
“It was one of the greatest events that any sporting event has ever put on,” the podcaster added. “I mean, maybe the greatest sporting event in the history of the world … I’m so happy I went. I’m so happy I was there to see it live. It was a real honor.”
Demonstrators in Washington and across the U.S. protested Trump’s UFC event, which was the first private, for-profit sporting event ever held on White House grounds.
Protestors also slammed the bizarre spectacle for numerous other reasons, including the fact that Trump reportedly owns an unknown number of shares in TKO Group Holdings, the UFC’s parent company, and that the event was held despite the Iran war still going on.
The event came under more scrutiny after UFC heavyweight fighter Josh Hokit falsely accused former first lady Michelle Obama of being a man during his post-match interview with Rogan on the White House lawn.
