DETROIT -- After a horrendous road trip through California, the Detroit Red Wings used the extra travel day to clear their heads. They will try to get back on the winning track on Thursday night when they host the New York Islanders.
The Red Wings put forth a terrible series of results in the Golden State over the past weekend. After blowing a multi-goal lead against the Anaheim Ducks and getting pummeled by the Los Angeles Kings, Detroit salvaged a measly point against the last-place San Jose Sharks on Monday night, losing 5-4 in overtime to cap off the trip with a whimper.
While the season is far from over, the recent trend of lackluster play for the Wings has many in Hockeytown concerned. Concerned about whether or not this team is good enough to contend for a playoff spot after many expected this to be the year Detroit gets over the hump. With losses in five of their last six games, the Wings are tied for last in the Atlantic Division with the Montreal Canadiens.
Things certainly have not been as bad on Long Island, though things still are not great for Patrick Roy’s team. Though they have the defense to keep them in games, the Islanders have been floundering since a solid start to the season. After losing four of their last five games, the Isles sit fifth in the Metropolitan Division.
This is the second of three meetings this year between the Red Wings and Islanders. Thanks to a great effort from Alex Lyon, Detroit snuck out of Long Island with a 1-0 win late last month.
