It’s a great time to be a New York Knicks fan and 12-year-old Carmelo Rios would agree. When his mom gifted him tickets to Game 5 of the Playoffs for his 12th birthday, his gratitude and shock instantly went viral. But sadly, there ended up being no Game 5 in the Playoffs, so his excitement was short lived. In a crazy turn of events, Fanatics wanted to make Carmelo’s dream come true so they got the person the 12 year old is named after, NBA legend Carmelo Anthony, to help get him to a Finals game in New York City. So one can say that it wasn’t only the Knicks that experienced the greatest comeback, because Carmelo’s story is one filled with hope, gratitude, and many feel-good moments after disappointment. Carmelo and his mom, Angelisa, spoke with The Blast just days after the Knicks won the championship to get the full story of the experience and what’s next for the family, because this story isn’t quite over yet. When Angelisa posted a video on TikTok showing what she got her son Carmelo for his 12th birthday, it quickly went viral. But as fast as it went viral, it also shifted into sadness and disappointment. In the video, we see that Angelisa surprised both her son and her husband with Game 5 tickets in the Playoffs. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Carmelo fell to the floor crying, full of gratitude and excitement. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a need for Game 5, since the Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games. While there was excitement for the Knicks going to the Finals, there was also disappointment over not getting to see a game at Madison Square Garden. But that quickly changed. Fanatics And Carmelo Anthony Teamed Up To Get Carmelo Rios To A Finals Game Fanatics reached out to Angelisa to share some amazing news. They wanted to make it happen for the 12-year-old fan and upped the ante with a special partnership to get the message to him. “Fanatics had reached out to me and I found out that Carmelo Anthony was the one who was going to be delivering the message that Carmelo had gotten tickets to Game 4,” Angelisa told The Blast exclusively. “I found out a few hours before Fanatics actually gifted him the jersey, and of course, when they told me that was going to be a part of it, that put everything in overdrive. I couldn’t even believe it.” Fanatics sent over the video for Carmelo to watch, making the whole experience feel very “full circle” for Angelisa, who explained that her son is named after the NBA superstar. When chatting with Carmelo, he shared how he was feeling finding out that he was going to a Finals game and was going to meet Carmelo Anthony. “When that happened, I was just in pure shock that he was the one that was asked to give us the news, and that we were gonna go to such a special game, and then I met him at the actual game,” he told The Blast. “I thought that was the good luck charm to make us go on that insane comeback game, all the emotions went to my head.” He added, “I can’t believe I can now finally say I witnessed when my team won their championship. It feels so surreal to be able to say that.” When asked what it was like meeting the NBA legend, Carmelo said he was a “super down-to-earth guy.” “People were saying the way he treated me was like one of his own kids,” he added. “That meant a lot to me and we got to make such a lasting memory happen on one of the greatest stages in the world, that was just surreal.” Angelisa added her POV of the meeting and how it all went down. “We just knew an hour before Game 4 that Carmelo Anthony wanted to meet him, so I didn’t exactly know how it was gonna transpire. They told us after the first quarter, security was gonna come get Carmelo, but not to tell him why,” she shared. “Me and my husband were able to go down courtside. Spike Lee was actually talking to Carmelo Anthony so my Carmelo didn’t see Carmelo Anthony at first until Spike Lee stepped back.” She said the entire meeting felt like they were in “their own bubble” and that Carmelo Anthony “made it happen in a sea of people and just treated Carmelo as if they were in a room alone together.” She added that the “conversation was so impactful.” Carmelo’s Knicks Experience Isn’t Quite Over Yet With the Knicks championship parade on Thursday, Carmelo’s Knicks story isn’t over just yet. “We’re hoping to get an invitation to watch the parade from somewhere where we can really enjoy it in the safest way possible because we know how many people are going to be there,” Angelisa told The Blast. “After that, just really soaking it all in and then seeing what comes next. We’re going to be Knicks fans forever.” Carmelo shared some advice for other kids who have big dreams. “What God has planned to happen will come to fruition as time goes on, and never lose hope that even the wildest thing might actually happen,” he said. Angelisa also wanted to add a final thought about the whole experience. “It’s not lost on us that so many people made this happen. Everybody on social media that wanted to see this story come full circle, they’re partly responsible for this too,” she shared. “And we’re so grateful to Fanatics, who gifted Carmelo his two tickets, and Kalshi, who gifted me my two tickets so we could be in attendance for Game 4. We’re just so grateful.”
