Carlos Alcaraz cracked a humorous joke as he congratulated Alex De Minaur on his engagement to Katie Boulter in front of fans at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday night.
It came after De Minaur had beaten the jet-lagged Spanish star in a highly entertaining exhibition match on Wednesday.
De Minaur is gunning to end a 50-year long wait for a home-grown player to win the Australian Open this week in Melbourne.
And the 25-year-old showcased his talents on Wednesday night, sweeping his way past the four-time major winner with a 7-5 4-6 10-5 victory.
On the eve of the Australian Open, their encounter lasted two hours and four minutes, with Alcaraz also gunning to win his first-ever Australian Open title.
For De Minaur, its been a busy few weeks already, having recently announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend Katie Boulter.
Many from around the tennis world have congratulated the Brit and the Aussie on their huge relationship milestone, with Alcaraz delivering a public show of delight for the couple on Rod Laver Arena, before opening up about his love life.
'I mean I already told him congratulations,' Alcaraz said.
The Spaniard then cracked a joke, with sections of the audience breaking out in fits of laughter.
'I don't know if you're sure about it,' he said, tongue-in-cheek.
'No I mean I've seen them in tournaments. I don't know Katie very much but it seems that she is a really nice person.
'I think you're going to enjoy this marriage and hopefully everything's going to be good.
The conversation also led to the topic of Alcaraz's relationship status, with the 21-year-old claiming that he was 'too young' to get engaged.
'Carlos, you're not engaged, still on the market?' the interviewer asked, with the audience, and De Minaur, letting out a loud cheer.
'No, no, no, no,' Alcaraz said. 'No engagement so far, single so far.
'I laugh with some close people that there were also three or four tennis players that got engaged.'
'I thought that it was my turn, but no,' he joked.
Alcaraz enjoyed an excellent 2024 season, winning both at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
In his last appearance at the Australian Open, he reached the quarter-finals but will be out to go all the way in Melbourne this week.
'I love playing these kind of matches against these kind of players where it’s always a battle, every point.
'Coming back here and suffering on court, playing against Alex is great, but at the same time, you know, I wanted to take more days before facing him.
'But it was a great warm-up.'
