Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz delivered a worrying response to his team during his latest defeat. The Spaniard saw his Miami Open campaign end early after a three-set defeat to Sebastian Korda, ensuring he wasn’t able to bounce back from an Indian Wells elimination at the hands of Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz told coach Samuel Lopez “I can’t do any more” after dropping the first set to American star Korda. He was able to rally in the second set, winning it 7-5, but Korda took the third 6-4 to move into the round of 16.
“It’s just to make it look better, a 6-3, 6-4 or 6-3, 7-5, something like that,” Alcaraz was heard saying to Lopez. “I can’t do any more, I can’t do any more.” Despite encouragement from his corner, the 22-year-old made his frustrations clear. “I can’t take it anymore, I want to go home now, man,” he continued. “I can’t take it anymore, I can’t take it anymore, I can’t take it anymore.” With the clay court season just around the corner, the Australian Open champion will want to put his recent struggles behind him as quickly as possible.
Korda, ranked outside the world’s top 30, had only won one of his five previous meetings with Alcaraz. The Spaniard has beaten him twice at Roland Garros, first in 2022 and then during a run to French Open glory in 2024.
Speaking after the latest loss, Alcaraz said he was likely to return home and take some time to recharge. "Chilling with my family, with my friends a couple of days. I don't know how much my team are going to allow me to have rest and a day off,” he said.
"The clay season is around the corner. My mind right now is to take some days off, to reset my mind, reset the batteries, be ready and in good shape for the clay season."
As top seed, Alcaraz got a bye to the round of 64 in Miami. He beat Joao Fonseca in straight sets but came up short against Korda, who will now play qualifier Martin Landaluce for a place in the quarter-finals.
In the other half of the draw, second seed Jannik Sinner will take on Corentin Moutet in his third round match on Monday. Defending champion Jakub Mensik is also still alive in the tournament, with Frances Tiafoe his next opponent.
"I took the scenic route, that's for sure - a little more stress than I would want but happy with how I played. I kept believing. I got myself in some nasty situations, but I kept going and played really well in the end."
