The Buffalo Bills made a shocking move on Monday, parting ways with their head coach, Sean McDermott. The decision came after a heartbreaking loss against the Denver Broncos in the NFL Playoffs.
Former NFL MVP Cam Newton didn’t sugarcoat the situation when he discussed it on First Take on Monday. The former quarterback strongly believes that Allen’s game placed McDermott in a doomsday scenario.
“Why are we tiptoeing around the obvious issue here, and it's the underperforming Josh Allen,” Newton said.
“I mean, as a person, this was supposed to be his year. The quarterbacks that you're going up against are potentially going up against was Bo Nix, Drake Maye, and CJ Stroud. And when you start to think about your performance in Denver, you had an opportunity to win, and you didn’t. So, as we critique Josh Allen, people are losing their jobs because of Josh Allen! Out of all the turnovers, the worst turnover for me was the one right before the half, because it was a 10-point swing right there.”
There is a reason why Allen was full of tears at the postgame podium over the weekend. The veteran quarterback knew that he needed to play at the highest level possible if the Bills wanted to advance. Allen is no rookie when it comes to postseason play, but he hasn’t been able to lead his team to a Super Bowl just yet.
The AFC saw a lot of changes this season in the postseason picture. The most notable difference was the fact that the regulars, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens, were not a part of the action. It was viewed as the year that Allen could lead the Bills to the big stage.

Instead, a four-turnover outing on the road in Denver resulted in an eventual playoff loss for Buffalo. They failed to make it to the AFC Championship after coming up short against the Chiefs there last year.
“If we're as great as Josh Allen is, he has not shown the clutch gene that we judge the quarterbacks off of in order to be a great player. And this is coming from a guy who did not do this all the time, but if we're talking about being a member of the media now, we judge players off this metric, how he performs late in the season, and also, how does he perform late in games?” Newton continued. “Josh Allen has not shown up, and that's the thing now that you, if I'm Sean McDermott, I'm really scratching my head.”
What’s Next for the Bills?
Allen had a tough performance, but the Bills aren’t going to overreact about their quarterback’s struggles in the Divisional Round. He is widely viewed as the top passer in the game.
As for McDermott, he hits the coaching free agency market for the first time since becoming a head coach in 2017. The expectation is that McDermott will get a chance to interview for other openings across the league.
