Did you take advantage of a recent coin exploit in ARC Raiders? Well, you may be about to be wrist-slapped by ARC Raiders, depending on how much you took advantage. Embark has just issued a statement confirming different levels of punishment for different levels of “abuse.”
The duplication glitch was rapidly passed around the community and shown off to over a hundred thousand players by big-time ARC streamer TheBurntPeanut alone. While the dupe was stopped quickly, there was plenty of time to use it, and now, you will face one of the following punishments:
• Warnings for low-severity cases where abuse was limited
• Suspensions for the severe cases, particularly, where exploit usage had a significant impact on the in-game economy or other players’ experience
Deleting the coins in question was obviously going to happen, but you could really, really run up the score here if you went hard on the glitch. If that was you, you may find yourself suspended from the game, though the exact lengths of this are not clear. My guess is that Embark doesn’t want to bring the hammer down too hard on players.
Embark is not amused by all this, though whenever this sort of thing happens, there is a debate about whether it’s the game’s fault for allowing a potential exploit through or the players’ fault for using it. It’s a rather eternal question across all games. But at the very least, resetting the economy needs to happen for the health of the game, so you cannot fault them for that. Embark had this to say about the future of problems like this:
In addition to exploits, ARC Raiders has been plagued by flat-out cheaters, a problem more serious than in other FPS games, given that death isn’t just losing a round of a game, it’s deleting all your stuff inside the extraction genre. The game has been able to retain its very large userbase, but since the end of January, its 410,000 peak was most recently 250,000, so there is some amount of noticeable bleed starting to happen. We’ll see what these exploit punishments may do.
