The surging contenders of the San Antino Spurs. Two teams who absolutely despise one another, the upcoming Western Conference final is one of the most-anticipated NBA playoff matchups of the past decade. Both teams deploy some of the best young players in the league, but who really has the top dog heading into this heavyweight title fight? Before the series tips off, here are my top five players dueling for the crown out in the West. More news: Thunder vs Spurs Could Become Gen Z’s Cavs-Warriors More news: Wembanyama vs. Knicks? The 3 Most Intriguing NBA Finals Matchups This might be premature, but he is my choice for the No. 1 player heading into the West finals. Wembanyama has been better overall through the first two rounds of the playoffs, and if he's at his absolute best, there is nothing the Thunder can do to stop him. SGA is about to win back-to-back league MVPs, and the scariest thing about the Thunder is that he hasn't been nearly at his best so far this postseason. Oklahoma City is so deep that a random player they drafted last year, who was at the end of the bench, can come in and slap around the Los Angeles Lakers. Make no mistake, however, if the Thunder want to create their dynasty and defend their championship, Gilgeous-Alexander is going to need to play like an MVP. Out of every player in this series, Holmgren's entire career has the most at stake. If he can neutralize Wembanyama and continue playing elite ball while toppling the Spurs, Holmgren suddenly starts looking like a possible top-10 player in the league and creates what could be a legendary rivalry with the French giant. If he loses, though? Especially if he gets dominated by Wembanyama? His stock will crater beneath the Earth's core, maybe never to be recovered again. I'm incredibly high on Holmgren, but this truly is his series. We know who SGA and Wembanyama are, win or lose. Holmgren wants to be a superstar, and this is his moment. Castle has been nothing short of fantastic this postseason, especially against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the conference semifinals. He was the dagger in Minnesota's heart in Game 6, shooting 11-16 from the field and scoring 32 points along with 11 rebounds and six assists. Like Holmgren, if the Spurs can beat the Thunder here, Castle could continue making his way up the star hierarchy in the NBA. How will Williams be after missing the past six games due to a Grade 1 hamstring injury that has kept him out of action for the entirety of the semifinal series against the Lakers? He truly could be the X-factor of this matchup. If he's playing at his best like he was against the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals in 2025, then the Thunder should be on the verge of a repeat. If not, though, this series gets a lot more interesting.
