MLB insider suggests deadline deal for Rangers that would bring All-Star bat to Texas

With the Rangers hanging on to first place in the AL West with a 50-49 record entering a seven-game homestand, Texas is at a crossroads. Will the Rangers be buyers and go after a potential playoff run in 2026, or will their deadline approach prioritize the future instead? If Texas decides to add, Jim Bowden, a national baseball writer for The Athletic and former baseball executive, sees one potential move for the Rangers that would make sense given Texas' needs. He listed five trades he'd like to see happen this season and one of them involves an offensive boost for the Rangers. Bowden's trade idea sees the Rangers acquire infielder Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for two prospects: LHP Dalton Pence and infielder Yolfran Castillo. According to MLB Pipeline's recently updated rankings, Pence is Texas' No. 12 prospect while Castillo slots in at No. 8. In The Dallas Morning News' latest Rangers prospect rankings, Castillo was No. 3 and Pence was No. 14. "The Rangers could use another hitter to create traffic on the bases, and that’s exactly what Arraez brings to the table. Arraez won batting titles with three different teams from 2022 to 2024. He is in the middle of his best season in the big leagues both offensively and defensively. Arraez doesn’t have power or speed but is much improved defensively at second base and puts pressure on opposing defenses by constantly making contact and creating RBI opportunities. "Pence, 23, has reached Double-A and has put up impressive numbers at every level he’s pitched at. He misses bats and knows how to pitch. He was the Rangers’ 2024 11th-round pick out of North Carolina. "Castillo, 19, is an infielder from Venezuela who has played at two different A-ball levels this year, getting on base and stealing bases at a high clip. He plays both shortstop and third base and profiles as a table setter. This would be a strong return for the Giants." Arraez does seem to be a fit for the Rangers given his potential role in the offense and the fact his contract isn't prohibitive for Texas. He signed a one-year deal with the Giants and has put together his best season since his All-Star years with the Twins and Marlins from 2022-24. The 29-year-old Venezuelan infielder made the National League All-Star team this summer and, ironically enough, stuck out against Rangers closer Jacob Latz in the All-Star Game. Entering Monday's action, Arraez is slashing .326/.366/.455 on the year with four home runs and 36 RBIs. Arraez's 3.7 WAR, according to FanGraphs, would be the most among Rangers hitters by a fairly considerable margin if Texas were to acquire him. His staggeringly low 4.3% strikeout rate is the lowest in all of the major leagues.
