Many years before accepting the New York Giants’ head coaching job, John Harbaugh was a defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, working under Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.
During Harbaugh’s run with the Eagles, Philadelphia found plenty of success, especially on the defensive side of the ball. It helped him land the Baltimore Ravens’ head coaching job in 2008. For decades after that, Harbaugh was recognized as one of the most successful coaches in the game.
But change is here for Harbaugh, who was shockingly let go after a disappointing season for Baltimore. As expected, Andy Reid reached out to his former assistant to send a short yet strong message to Harbaugh. The Giants’ head coach revealed it on Tuesday.
“He’s a man of a few words, and his four words to me were, ‘Change can be good.’ That’s what he said,” Harbaugh told reporters during his official introductory press conference.
“He’s fired up for us. He’s a good friend. How about this? How about we deal with that right now? We’ll sign up for that deal right now. What he did in Kansas City, let’s do that,” Harbaugh finished.
If there is one coach who took advantage of change, it’s Reid. From 1999 to 2012, Reid coached the Eagles. He had a solid record and many playoff appearances and wins, but couldn’t bring a Super Bowl to Philadelphia for the first time in franchise history. Eventually, the situation got stale, and Reid was let go.
The Chiefs picked up the veteran head coach in 2013 and have built the league’s most prominent dynasty after the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady run for the New England Patriots. Reid is now a three-time Super Bowl champion since landing in Kansas City.
Harbaugh isn’t joining the Giants empty-handed. He coached the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory during the 2012 season. It’s been a while since he’s landed on the Super Bowl stage, but he hopes to find the same success as Reid, as he links with the young budding star Jaxson Dart on the Giants.
