UFC chief White, 56, has revealed that McGregor is facing a long road to recovery.
He has explained that McGregor will have to overcome several hurdles before he can return to the octagon.
“Conor McGregor has to have knee surgery,” White said to TMZ. “Then he has to go through physical therapy.
“A doctor is going to have to give him a sign off on when he can start training hard again. He’s got a lot of things to figure out in his head and his life before he starts to think about boxing or UFC again.”
It comes after McGregor lasted just 69 seconds against Max Holloway, 34, earlier in July.
This was McGregor’s first UFC bout for five years.
But the fight was stopped after McGregor suffered a major knee injury.
Now White has explained that McGregor is facing another lengthy layoff.
“It’s going to be a long comeback for him if he decides that’s what he wants to do,” White continued.
McGregor has since confirmed that he has suffered injuries to his ACL and meniscus.
He previously tore his ACL and meniscus against Holloway during his second UFC appearance in 2013.
An ACL injury usually takes between six months and a year of recovery.
His latest injury has raised significant questions over his future in the UFC.
Even White has suggested this could be the end of the road for the Irish star.
However, McGregor has issued a defiant stance on his comeback chances.
He has outlined his plans to return to full health and fight once again.
